How to read a note pyramid

Open almost any fragrance page, on this site or elsewhere, and you will meet the same diagram: three stacked tiers of ingredients labelled top, heart and base. The note pyramid is the most widely used shorthand in perfumery, and also the most widely misread. It is not a recipe, it is not a timeline with fixed hours attached, and it is not always written by the perfumer. Used well, it is a map of how a composition is likely to unfold. This guide explains what each tier represents, the chemistry behind the arrangement, where the model breaks down, and how to check the pyramid against your own skin.

What the three tiers mean

The pyramid was popularised in the twentieth century as a way of teaching the structure of a classical French perfume. It describes a fragrance as a sequence rather than a single smell.

Top notes (also called head notes) are what you perceive in the first minutes after spraying. They are typically bright and light: citrus such as bergamot, lemon or grapefruit; aromatic herbs such as lavender and basil; sparkling effects such as aldehydes. Their job is to make an impression and then step aside.

Heart notes (middle notes) emerge as the opening fades, usually within fifteen minutes to an hour, and carry the fragrance through its main act. Flowers dominate here in classical structures: rose, jasmine, iris, ylang-ylang. Spices such as black pepper and cardamom and green materials like geranium also live in the heart.

Base notes are the slowest to reveal themselves and the last to leave, often persisting for many hours. They are the heavy, tenacious materials: woods such as sandalwood, vetiver and cedar; resins such as benzoin and labdanum; vanilla, musk and the amber accord. The base is the part that ends up as the skin scent you notice the next morning.

The tiers are usually drawn with the top at the peak and the base as the wide foundation, which is a reasonable visual metaphor: the base carries the most weight and lasts the longest, while the top is a small, bright point that vanishes quickly.

Volatility and molecular weight

The pyramid is not an arbitrary convention. It reflects a physical property called volatility, which is the tendency of a molecule to evaporate from a surface into the air. You can only smell a material once its molecules leave your skin and reach the receptors in your nose, so the rate at which a material evaporates determines when, and for how long, you perceive it.

Volatility correlates roughly with molecular size and weight. Small, light molecules such as limonene (the main component of citrus peel oils) or linalool (in lavender and many flowers) escape quickly, so they dominate the opening and are largely gone within the hour. Larger, heavier molecules, including the macrocyclic musks, the sesquiterpenes in vetiver and sandalwood, and the resin acids in labdanum and benzoin, evaporate slowly and can cling to skin and fabric for a day or more.

Perfumers talk about this in terms of evaporation curves rather than tiers. Each material has its own curve, and a finished perfume is the sum of dozens of overlapping curves. Two consequences follow. First, the boundaries between tiers are soft; a heart note such as jasmine is perceptible early on and still detectable late in the wear, simply at different intensities. Second, base materials are present from the very first second, even if they are masked by the louder volatiles above them. A skilled perfumer uses this to make the opening feel continuous with the drydown rather than disconnected from it.

Perfumers also use fixatives, materials that slow the evaporation of the whole blend. Classical fixatives included animal materials such as civet and ambergris; modern formulas lean on musks, resins and synthetic woody-ambers. Why the pyramid is a simplification

The three-tier model explains a great deal, but it describes one particular style of composition, the layered French perfume of the early and mid twentieth century. Many fragrances do not behave this way, and some pyramids are not what they seem.

Linear fragrances

A linear fragrance smells much the same from the first minute to the last. Instead of a dramatic opening giving way to a different heart, it presents a single idea and holds it. Many modern compositions built around a few powerful synthetic materials work like this: a woody-amber such as ambroxan, a musk, a modest citrus or spice facet, and very little that changes over time. Baccarat Rouge 540 is a good example; its saffron and jasmine open the door, but the amberwood and ambergris effect that defines it is there almost immediately and stays. Santal 33 is similarly stable. For such fragrances a pyramid diagram is honest about ingredients but misleading about structure; there is no real journey to read.

Accords versus notes

A note is a single perceived smell, and on this site each note has its own page. An accord is a blend of several materials designed to read as one new smell, in the way that a chord in music is heard as one sound rather than three separate strings. Chypre, fougère, amber and marine effects are all accords. When a pyramid lists "amber" or "sea notes", it is naming an accord, not a raw material, and the actual ingredients could be anything from labdanum and vanillin to a single synthetic like calone. Marketing pyramids

Most published pyramids are written by the brand's marketing department, not by the perfumer. They are curated for appeal: a fragrance built mostly on a handful of synthetic musks will be described in terms of the natural flowers that inspire it, and materials that lack romance, such as Iso E Super or hedione, may be omitted or renamed. Pyramids are also sometimes rearranged so that each tier contains a fashionable ingredient. Treat a published pyramid as a poem about the fragrance, useful for pointing your nose in the right direction but not to be mistaken for the formula, which is confidential and typically runs to dozens of lines.

How to test on skin over hours

Because a pyramid describes a sequence, the only way to read it properly is to give it time. A few minutes at a counter, on a paper blotter, tells you only about the top notes and the paper's own behaviour.

  1. Spray on clean skin. Two sprays on the inside of one wrist, or the crook of the elbow, are enough. Do not rub the wrists together; friction warms the skin and hurries the volatiles away.
  2. Smell at intervals. Note your impressions at one minute, fifteen minutes, one hour, three hours and, if you can, the next morning. Write them down; memory of smell is notoriously unreliable.
  3. Compare the tiers with the pyramid. Ask whether the published heart really arrives, whether the base is as described, and whether the fragrance changes at all. Where your notes disagree with the diagram, trust your notes.
  4. Test in different conditions. Heat accelerates evaporation, so a fragrance may seem louder and shorter in summer; cold slows it down. See our concentration, longevity and sillage guide for the variables involved.
  5. Test one at a time, or at most two on opposite arms. Beyond that, the noses fatigue and the samples blur into each other.

For an ambitious fragrance, allow a whole day and repeat the test on another day before drawing conclusions.

Worked example: Chanel N°5

Chanel N°5, composed by Ernest Beaux for Chanel in 1921, is the textbook layered perfume and a good place to practise reading a pyramid.

The top is a shock of aldehydes over bergamot and neroli. Aldehydes are synthetic materials with a fizzy, waxy, faintly metallic character, sometimes compared to the smell of a just-extinguished candle or freshly ironed linen. Beaux used them in unprecedented quantity, and they lift the citrus into something abstract and soapy-bright. Expect this phase to last twenty to thirty minutes, softening steadily.

The heart is a dense floral bouquet: iris, jasmine, rose and ylang-ylang. The point of the composition is that no single flower dominates; the aldehydes blur their edges into a single powdery, luminous abstraction. On skin this heart is fully present by the first hour and remains the dominant impression into the afternoon.

The base brings sandalwood, vetiver, vanilla and musk. The vanilla is faint, more warmth than sweetness; the sandalwood and musk make the powdery texture creamy and skin-like. In the parfum concentration this drydown can still be found on skin the following morning.

Reading the pyramid this way, you can anticipate the arc: sparkle, then bloom, then warmth. On skin, the tiers overlap far more than the diagram suggests, and the aldehydic haze never fully leaves, but the sequence is real.

Worked example: Terre d'Hermès

Terre d'Hermès, composed by Jean-Claude Ellena for Hermès in 2006, shows a different kind of structure: sparse, transparent and built from far fewer materials than a classical bouquet.

The top is grapefruit and orange, bitter rather than sweet. Ellena's citrus is peel and pith rather than juice. It is bright but not fizzy, and it fades within the first half hour.

The heart is where the fragrance earns its name. Black pepper, geranium and a mineral flint effect give an impression of warm stone and dry, crushed leaves. The pepper is sharp; the geranium adds a rosy-green edge; the flint accord is not a raw material but an effect, built from woody-amber synthetics, that reads as struck rock. This is the phase most people identify as Terre d'Hermès.

The base is vetiver and cedar underpinned by a little benzoin. Ellena uses vetiver for its earthy, rooty bitterness rather than its smokiness, and the cedar is extended by a large dose of the woody synthetic Iso E Super, which is why the drydown seems to hover a few centimetres above the skin rather than sitting on it. The benzoin adds a gentle resinous warmth that stops the woods from feeling austere.

Compare the two examples and the limits of the pyramid become visible. Chanel N°5 moves through three distinct scenes. Terre d'Hermès moves from citrus into a mineral-woody accord within the hour and then stays there for the rest of the day, so its "heart" and "base" are really one long second act. The diagram gives both the same three-tier shape; only your skin, and a few hours of patience, will tell you the difference.

Putting the pyramid to work

Read a pyramid as a set of expectations to be tested, not as a promise. Look for the tier that will matter most to you, which is usually the heart and base, since those are what you will live with. Check whether the listed notes are materials or accords, and be sceptical of any diagram that reads like a florist's catalogue. Then spray, wait, and write down what actually happens.
